Town of Westerly Recreation Director
Julia began working with the Town of Westerly as a Positive Coaching Alliance workshop leader in 2017-18 and worked as a Westerly Town Beach Manager in 2018 under Director Paul Duffy. In 2019 Julia became the first full time Program Coordinator for Westerly Recreation. When Paul Duffy retired as Rec Director in May 2020, Julia stepped in as Interim Director and became full time Director in November 2020. Recreation has relocated their main office to the Olean Center at 93 Airport Road in Westerly. She is responsible for overseeing Town Beach Management, Field and Facility Usage at 7 Outdoor Facilities, Rec Programming and Camps and Department oversight. She has written grants for Department of Health Nicotine abatement program and updated the town ordinance to prohibit vaping at the town beaches; the Take it Outside Grant during the Covid pandemic; Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds Youth Organizer Position for Bradford Village and has contributed to many grant applications for DEM open Space Grants, United Way Summer Learning and American Rescue Plan Act. ARPA funds have been granted for a new John Deere Tractor and Beach rake for beach operations, LED Lights for Craig Softball Field, LED Pee Wee Football Fields and White Rock Skate Park Upgrades. Julia meets with the Recreation Board, the 3rd Tuesday of each month.
Julia has a background in waterfront management, teaching and coaching. She had the unique opportunity of representing the United States at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia, as the stroke of the Women’s Quadruple Sculls. She was 1998 Head of the Charles winner in the Champ Single and an inductee in the URI Athletics Hall of Fame for Swimming and Rowing. Julia is married to Cyrus Beasley of Beasley Woodworks LLC, a custom home design firm. They have three children, 19, 16 and 13 and enjoy everything the outdoors and the New England four seasons have to offer.
