2023 Citizens Police Academy

The members of the Westerly Police Department invite you to attend their 2023 Citizens Police Academy.

Classes will begin April 5th, 2023 (6 pm-8 pm) and will conclude with a graduation ceremony on June 7th.  

This 10 week program allows citizens to learn and experience the inner world of law enforcement, and a firsthand look at the daily operations of the Westerly Police Department. 

The training will consist of classroom instruction, demonstrations, tours, as well as hands-on practical applications.  Instructors will be members of the Westerly Police Department.

Some of the topics to be offered include: Uniformed Patrol, Crime Scene Investigations, Accident Investigation, Traffic Codes, K9 Operations, Domestic Violence, DUI Enforcement, Firearms Safety and much more.                    

To be considered all participants must :

  • Live or work in the Town of Westerly
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Have no prior felony convictions.

If you are interested in attending the Citizens Police Academy, please complete and return the attached registration form to Detective Howie Mills at hmills@westerlypolice.org or drop off to the Westerly Police Department.

Applicants will receive notification informing them of their acceptance once their application has been processed. 

Remember, class space is limited and slots will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. 

The requirements for graduation are that participants must attempt to complete 80% of the classes. If you are unable to make a majority of the classes please do not apply. Attendance is important. 

The Citizens Police Academy is provided to the citizens of the Town of Westerly, free of charge.
